Miles Philips was a young boy about the same age as Tom Oakley who sailed on the slaving voyage with Sir John Hawkins. My character Tom Oakley is loosely based on the true story of Miles Philips. Like Tom, Miles was captured by the Spanish at San Juan de Ulloa, and enslaved for many years. When he eventually escaped his story was written down by Richard Hakluyt, in his monumental Principal Navigations Voyages Traffiques and Discoveries of the English Nation. This short book tells the true story of Miles Philips, who had even more adventures  than Tom. I have modernized some of the spelling to make it easier to read.
